Watercolor Honor Society (WHS)

Gary Adamson has become a member of the Watercolor Honor Society (WHS). Artists who either receive an award given by the juror in Watercolor USA or whose painting has been purchased for the permanent collection of the Springfield Art Museum are granted the honor of qualifying for membership in the Watercolor Honor Society.

The Watercolor Honor Society (WHS) is considered one of the most prestigious watercolor organizations in the Untied States and works directly with the Springfield Art Museum to promote watercolor nationally with national exhibition opportunities from its membership, including the Watercolor Now exhibit, educational outreach, and support of the Watercolor USA annual exhibition at the Springfield Art Museum

SPRINGFIELD ARTIST RECEIVES AWARD
IN WATERCOLOR U.S.A. 2009 AT SPRINGFIELD ART MUSEUM

The 48th national, competitive, annual exhibition of aqueous media painting, “Watercolor U.S.A. 2009”, opened at the Springfield Art Museum 6 June 2009. The annual exhibition attracts entries from across the United States. The competition this year received 659 entries by 357 artists from 42 states.

Gary Adamson of Springfield, Missouri received the Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff Award for his watermedia painting, “Apples and Oranges”. A reception hosted by the Southwest Missouri Museum Associates was held 5 June from 5:30 - 7:00. The public was invited. “Watercolor U.S.A. 2009” will continue through 2 August 2009.

The judges for “Watercolor U.S.A. 2009” are Jerry A. Berger, Director of the Springfield Art Museum, Chalen Phillips, Curator of Collections and Sarah E. Buhr, Curator of Exhibitions.

The judges select the exhibition from slides and digital files submitted by the artists. A total of 155 works by 137 artists were accepted for the exhibition. Awards are selected from the actual works.

Watercolor U.S.A. began in 1962 to present to the public a watercolor show which was representative of our country. Artists from 45 out of 50 states sent their entries to the Springfield Art Museum. The total prize money paid out to the nine winners was $2,250.00. The jury consisted of two men, Mario Cooper: painter and President of the American Watercolor Society, of Port Washington, NY; and Rex Brandt, painter, author, teacher from Corona Del Mar, CA. There were 155 artists accepted in the first Watercolor U.S.A. show.

Running concurrently with “Watercolor USA 2009”, is an exhibition that highlights contemporary watermedia painting from Japan. Organized as an exchange exhibition with the Watercolor USA National Honor Society (WHS), the Museum is exhibiting a selection of works from the Japanese Watercolor Federation, and next year, artists from WHS will have their works exhibited in Japan.

The Death of Black Kettle

This pastel received a $1,500 purchase award and was placed in the Springfield Art Museum collection last fall. It was featured on the cover of the show catalog (shown here). Called "The Death of Black Kettle" it is based on an Indian Wars battle in November, 1868 in which the Cheyenne peace chief, Black Kettle was killed by George Armstrong Custer's troops in the Battle of Washita in Western Oklahoma. Custer and the man who sent him there, General Phillip Sheridan are depicted. Black Kettle and his wife, Medicine Woman Later were trampled by horses of the Federal troop.
